Partnering with Puzzle Partners was critical to the success of our workplace transformation project with Transgrid. Having Puzzle manage the people side of the change allowed me to focus fully on delivering the project.  From the outset, the Puzzle team not only brought workplace expertise but also a deep understanding of the human side of change, helping us navigate the complexities of shifting people’s mindsets, behaviours, and ways of working.

Puzzle worked seamlessly with internal and external teams and stakeholders, crafting a change strategy and implementation plan that was not only practical but also empathetic to the needs of Transgrid's people. Through stakeholder engagement, targeted communications, and tailored engagement and co-creation activities, Puzzle ensured that everyone affected by the workplace change felt supported and empowered throughout the transition.

I would highly recommend Puzzle Partners to any organisation undertaking a workplace change initiative. It was a true partnership, and Puzzle was instrumental in delivering a successful outcome.

Puzzle were engaged to provide a people-focused approach to the introduction of a new workplace and new Ways Of Working for Transgrid.

the opportunity

Transgrid, a leading electricity transmission network operator, was struggling with their head office facilities, which were outdated and failing to support modern ways of working. Transgrid undertook significant refurbishment works as a staged in-situ project, to create a workplace that would better support their current and future needs – better enabling collaboration, connection, innovation and creativity.

To address these challenges, Transgrid embarked on a comprehensive refurbishment project of their head office, Transgrid Central. The workplace strategy and redesign focused on creating a modern, flexible workspace that would enhance collaboration, improve technology integration, and provide a variety of work settings to meet different needs.

The project itself involved extensive planning, evolving organisational needs (including considerations of a new business entity), and a phased implementation approach to minimise disruption. The impact on Transgrid’s people was significant – people were asked to change from traditional to agile/flexible ways of working, including unassigned desks, an increase in shared spaces, lockers, and neighbourhoods.

our  approach

The refurbishment project included several key deliverables:

  • Space Variety and Settings: The new design introduced a wide variety of spaces, including focus rooms, informal connection spaces, and different workstation configurations, to support various work styles and tasks.

  • Technology Integration: Upgraded technology infrastructure, including improved virtual collaboration tools and better workstation technology, was implemented to support efficient work.

  • Workplace Etiquette and Guidelines: Clear guidelines on space sharing, noise management, and meeting room etiquette were established to promote a respectful and productive work environment.

  • Physical Improvements: Enhancements such as better soundproofing, improved locker access, and ergonomic furniture were made to increase comfort and usability.

the results

The outcomes of the Transgrid Central project were highly positive:

  • Increased Staff Satisfaction: Post-move surveys indicated a 50% increase in staff satisfaction with the workplace, with 81% of staff feeling positive about the new space.

  • Enhanced Efficiency: 80% of staff reported that the new spaces, settings, and technology supported them to work efficiently in the office.

  • Higher Office Utilisation: With the new design, 68% of staff used their workstations for six hours or more each day, and 60% used their lockers daily.

  • Positive Feedback on Design: Staff appreciated the variety of spaces and the inviting areas for informal connections, with 84% giving positive ratings for these aspects.

Overall, the Transgrid Central project successfully transformed the office environment, addressing the initial challenges and creating a modern, efficient, and engaging workplace for Transgrid staff. Post-occupancy feedback has been extremely positive and the team have embraced and are reaping the benefits of their new way of working.
